What does naturally shed mean?
I’m glad you asked that question. Naturally shed means that only Male Elk grow antlers and annually, they shed their antlers naturally once a year. This means that they naturally fall off into the wilderness. Other antlered mammals, that follow natures shedding process are Moose & Deer. Male (bull) elk grow a new set of antlers every year, beginning when they are 1 year old. They shed these antlers every year in late winter or early spring and begin to grow a new set of antlers in spring.
The Shedding Process
Antler shedding is linked to decreasing testosterone levels in males only. As testosterone levels decrease, special cells called osteoclasts form at the juncture of the skull and antler. Osteoclasts reabsorb calcium from the antler, weakening the joint between the skull and antler until the antler drops.
Time of Year
Most elk shed their antlers from February until April. Large bulls tend to drop their antlers first, with young bulls carrying their antlers longer.
Individuals within the same elk herd may drop their antlers at different times. Also, an individual animal may drop the second antler days or weeks after dropping the first. Once the Elk shed their antlers, they immediately begin to grow back and within 3-4 months, they will have a whole new set of antlers. In fact, in the wild, most animals will enjoy a nibble on antlers they find that have fallen in the woods.
Looking for Shed Elk Antlers
Looking for elk sheds is a popular activity. Elk Antlers has become one of the worlds largest premier item for dogs. Elk Antlers once cut and cleaned to size either whole or split sizes is becoming the hottest items that dogs love to chew. Other People use elk antlers to make chandeliers, belt buckles, knife handles and other rustic crafts, as well as for medicinal purposes. Each May, Boy Scouts collect hundreds of elk antlers in the National Elk Refuge in Jackson, Wyoming, to be sold at an antler auction.
Shed Hunting Laws
Wildlife biologists discourage shed hunters from looking for antlers until after the snow melts and elk can find food. In 2009, the Wyoming Legislature adopted a law giving the Wyoming Game and Fish Department the power to regulate shed hunting in some areas to protect wintering animals from harassment. Its also very important to know that if any Elk, Deer and Moose Antlers are never used or processed for sale if they were not naturally shed as a result of hunting, accidents or any other ways the animal has been killed. This can be easily identified by the sizes and most importantly the marrow inside the antler is not naturally hard and cured and given the proper time to naturally fall off and shed within the allocated time limits and life span of the antler annually. This natural cycle continues annually during their life span. The end user is a happy dog and happy owner knowing that no animals are being harmed compared to what’s being offered in the pet industry such as other items like animal bones, ears, raw hides, raw food, bully sticks ( Bull Penis) and as much as horns that come from other killed or dead animals.
There are many different opinions to that question amongst veterinarians and pet owners. The one thing all veterinarians will agree upon is the best thing we can do to keep teeth clean hands down is brushing! Only 10 % of US households brush their dog’s teeth at least 4 days a week.
Rawhide chew toys are one of the worst inventions for dogs.
Always buy organic natural chews like our Elk Antler Dog Chew which is long lasting, high, no preservatives and helps clean the teeth and gum, highly nutritious and tasty.
Rawhides – Compressed Fat- given on a regular basis can lead to obesity. Make sure they are made in Canada – products from outside Canada may contain arsenic, formaldehyde, and portions of dog skin. They are fully digestible, but when moistened they can be more appealing to try and swallow and lead to a choking potential.
Marrow Bones/ butcher bones- Make sure produced in the Canada – Make sure you get large chews for more aggressive chewers to prevent direct vertical pressure leading to dental fractures. Even though they are at a Lower cost, readily available, they can leave a bigger mess, known to get stuck around lower jaw if not taken away when they are small, possible intestinal blockage/splintering, marrow is 60% fat and can lead to GI upset, and can fracture teeth. Note raw bones can promote bacterial growth- Refreezing is recommended to kill off bacteria.
Nylabones- Pros: Promote healthy chewing, not likely to cause dental fractures, last longer times, no additional calories. Cons: Non-digestible, known to cause intestinal obstruction, imitation products on the market.
Kong Toys – Pros: Reusable, natural rubber, durable, non-staining (unless you stuff it with Peanut Butter), no odor, long lasting, good variety of sizes, Cons: Can be chewed into smaller pieces, many dogs don’t like them unless they are stuffed, and uncertain of true dental cleaning benefit due to soft and smooth texture.
Greenies /Dental Bones- Pros: Fully digestible, great for cleaning teeth, Make sure they are made in Canada, Cons: can be more expensive for larger breeds, recommended each day, have caused intestinal blockage in select cases, and can cause GI sensitivity/allergies.
*** Remember you can never offer too big of a bone or antler but you can offer too small of one. Dogs who are aggressive chewers or tend to be scarfers need to have larger chews to prevent dental trauma from direct vertical pressure of their dental arcades. Not one chew is perfect for each pet. Please monitor your pets with any new chew. All chews can cause a choking hazard. Be sure to remove chews that are getting to small. Chewing is as natural & healthy an activity for dogs as Elk Antler is for them to chew on.
As not all dogs chew at the same level, we created the split cut antler that allows easy access to the marrow middle while providing all the same great benefits as the whole antlers. The split antler is the perfect option for teething puppies, senior dogs and for the gentler chewer.
